MANY PEOPLE in the UK still struggle with their body confidence. Unrealistic beauty standards and pressure from social media make this problem worse. One in five people say that issues with their body image always affect their sex lives, and fifteen percent say that their body image has hurt their relationship with a partner or spouse in the last year.
Even with these problems, Londoners are now the most confident in their bodies in the UK. The health and wellness app Kic recently did a poll and found that 25% of Londoners love their bodies. It’s more than in any other city in Britain. Belfast and Norwich, on the other hand, had the lowest scores, with only 6% of people in each place being happy with their appearance.
So, what makes people in London more sure of themselves, and how can other people do the same?
The Importance of Body Confidence
Being confident in your body isn’t just about looking good in a swimsuit; it affects every part of your life, from your relationships to your job. Studies have shown that trust is one of the most attractive qualities in a partner, sometimes even more attractive than looks. Still, many people have problems with having a bad opinion of themselves.
A study by YouGov that polled 2,271 people in the UK about body image found that 18% of women and 10% of men feel that their insecurities always affect their sex lives. 61% of those who answered said that celebrity culture on social media was a big reason they were unhappy with their bodies. Fitness apps that show before and after pictures of body transformations and burned calories can also make you feel bad about your shortcomings.
Even with these problems, studies show that changing your thoughts, not your body, is the key to gaining confidence.
How to Feel Good About Your Body
1. Change the way you use social media
It may not be as bad for your self-esteem as you think to look through Instagram and see heavily edited and blurred photos. :
People should be careful about what kinds of media and social media they use. Stop following accounts that make you feel bad about how you look, and start following accounts that make you feel good about how you look.
By looking at accurate, diverse body images online, you can change your thoughts and develop a better self-image.
2. Change your negative thoughts with mantras
One thing that makes it hard to feel good about your body is negative self-talk. Many people focus on what they think are their flaws and ignore what they’re good at. Mantras are an intense way to change your thoughts and learn to accept yourself.
Instead of dwelling on your fears, say good things to yourself over and over, such as:
I’m enough.
I like my body the way it is.
I’m strong, hot, and sure of myself.
While meditation can be complex to handle at times, words make it easy to change your mind and let go of negative thoughts about your body.
3. Quit trying to find the “perfect” body
Some people think they’ll be happy once they’ve “fixed” a body part, which is not a good idea. What is real? There’s always something else to pay attention to. Try to love your body the way it is now instead of trying to make it perfect.
It can be freeing to spend time in front of the mirror and get used to seeing yourself without judging yourself. There will be less power for your fears over you as you get to know and accept your reflection.
London Is the Best at Being Positive About Your Body
So why do people in London feel the best about their bodies? Cultures that are open and accepting in the place may play a part. People with different body types, dress tastes, and ideas of what is beautiful may feel more at ease in their skin in London.
Kic’s poll found that, after London (25%), Birmingham came in second for body confidence, with 22% of Britons saying they love how they look. Plymouth (19%), Manchester (18%), and Leicester (18%) were some of the other places where people were pretty sure of their bodies.
On the other hand, people in Belfast and Norwich had the least trust; only 6% of people there said they were optimistic about their bodies. At 9%, Sheffield and Edinburgh came in right behind, and Liverpool came in at 10%. Interestingly, Stoke-on-Trent had a split response—while 17% of people reported loving their bodies, it also ranked the highest for body dissatisfaction, with 13% admitting they dislike their appearance.
What’s Next for Body Positive
People in London may be the most confident in their bodies, but society still has a long way to go. 83% of women polled said that worrying about their appearance has made them avoid some hobbies or social events. Social media plays a significant role in body image struggles.
By focusing on self-acceptance, surrounding ourselves with positive influences, and letting go of unrealistic beauty standards, more people across the UK—not just Londoners—can learn to love the skin they’re in.
What still holds is the sexiest thing anyone can wear, which is confidence.
