I GREW UP in an environment that convinced me my black skin and features were inferior, while white skin and features were deemed superior. This narrative stems from colonialism, which has long justified oppression, discrimination, and violence against people like me. The irony? Science says black skin has a biological advantage—superior in protection, resilience, and lifetime.
Scientific Melanin
Actually, my skin tone is a biological advantage—the very trait supposed to support prejudice. Melanin, the pigment giving my skin its exquisite colour, naturally protects against environmental damage.
Melanin absorbs and dissipates UV (UV) radiation, so protecting my skin from the damaging sun. Those with less melanin and lighter skin tones are quite more prone to develop skin cancer, early ageing, and sunburns. Though bigots promote it as “ideal,” white skin is really more sensitive to environmental damage.
• Slower Ageing Process: UV radiation is naturally protected from, so my skin maintains longer in suppleness and collagen structure. By developing wrinkles and fine lines significantly later in life than my white colleagues, I prove that darker skin is more resistant to ageing.
• Studies show melanin can absorb and offset ionising radiation, so maybe shielding against nuclear and space radiation outside UV protection. Scientists are even looking into synthetic melanin for defensive materials.
The Consequences of skin Bleaching
Despite these advantages, many Blacks and Asian’s use skin-bleaching cosmetics under social pressure. Driven by the beauty industry standards, that can be psychologically damaging and seriously damages health.
• Lower Risk of Skin Cancer: Melanin removal makes skin more UV damage sensitive.
Mercury and hydroquinone bleaching agents break the skin barrier, therefore irritating the skin and causing long-term irritation.
• Mercury can build up in the body and lead to neurological disorders, liver damage, and renal illness.
• Extended use can cause exogenous ochronosis, in which case patchy pigment causes the skin to permanently darken.
• Hormonal Imbalance: Certain products’ steroids throw off hormones, leading to acne, weight gain, and metabolic disorders.
Ironically, many white individuals harm their skin to match Eurocentric standards while others pay in tanning and melanin research to get the very protection my skin naturally delivers.
White Hypocracy
Besides being scientifically false, historically the presumption that white skin is better is ridiculous. The beauty industry peromotes tanning creams, melanin injections to darken peoples skin, and sunbeds, For people to strive to replicate the advantages of melanin. If white skin is indeed “superior,” why would one wish the advantages of darker skin?
• Medical Exploitation: Ironically, the very traits mocked at and criticised, the beauty industry is spending millions investigating melanin for anti-ageing treatments, and radiation defence. While Black people are persecuted for their natural traits—full lips, curly hair, dark skin—the industry appropriates them.
Final Word: The Accuracy Regarding Skin Superiority
My black skin is not less; rather, it is naturally better in many ways. And the beauty industry now aspires for the very benefits my skin naturally provides. My skin is strong, resilient, and worthy of respect—not persecution—it’s time embrace the scientific and historical truth.
