Sola in Soho: Understated, Elegant, and Unforgettable

WHEN A FRIEND said they would like to invite me to a “special dinner,” I immediately thought of a place with a Michelin star, high ceilings, and a smart dress code.

When we got to Soho, I was doing my best to imagine what the restaurant would look like because, having worked in Soho, space is at a premium, so the idea of a lavish-looking restaurant was diminished. The taxi stopped at an unassuming doorway that didn’t look like it belonged there. With a smile, they said, “This is it.” I’ll be honest: I was doubtful. But I told myself, Go with the flow; these guys don’t do anything by half. And also, the best adventures often come in packages you don’t expect. It’s a hidden gem that lets its food and setting speak for themselves. Sola is fancy but not flashy.

Where It Is: Understated Excellence

Once inside, the place felt like a mini-TARDIS—small on the outside, big on the inside—because they made good use of the space. With only 24 seats, it didn’t feel crowded. The open kitchen, soft lighting, and simple decor made the space feel warm and welcoming. It felt special without being fancy; instead, it was like being invited to a hidden dinner party by a chef who loves what they do. The staff put us at ease right away, and the atmosphere, which was both casual and classy, was a nice surprise.

What struck a chord with me was how different the quality of the experience was from how modest Sola appeared. It is tucked away on a quiet street with no airs and graces, wide views, or fancy decor like some Michelin-starred restaurants. Still, it holds its own against rivals with more flashy designs. I would go as far as to say that because of its simplicity, Sola shows that great food doesn’t need a fancy setting—it’s about the thought and care that went into every detail.

The Food: A Beautifully Made Work of Art

The highlight of the night was the sample menu. Each course was a carefully planned mix of tastes, textures, and sights that made me look forward to the next dish. It felt luxurious, like getting a massage at a sun-kissed five-star wellness resort while the rest of the world was miserable and in a hurry.

The signature Chocolate Cake dessert stood out. I was decadent enough to order it twice, and still, I wished I had an extra gut. Every bite was an adventure, and when the meal was over, I was amazed and full to the brim. The food was out of this world, and the service was flawless.

The Surprise Part

The magic of the night was made even stronger by the mystery. I went somewhere I didn’t expect, and Sola surprised me in the best way. It reminded me that great dining isn’t about how big the room is or how fancy the address is. It’s about how much love, care, and imagination went into every part. These traits are prevalent at Sola.
